January 5th - Over 40 Rotarians kicked off the New Year with a rousing first meeting of 2016 at the Loft. With the January 21st annual golf tournament at Buckhorn and the March 4th Wild Game Dinner on the horizon, Rotarians showed up in force to hand in their presale tickets and sponsorships and sign up for their foursomes and hole sponsorships.
Sergeant At Arms Fred Schwabe led the club in unison for the 4 way test and then told a joke that everyone actually laughed at. While rare, Fred's joke hitting some laughter wasn't as rare as a Tom Odiorne siting which really set the tone for the New Year! Fred then introduced guests Dan Coyle, who will be submitting application for membership, Brian Solano who is a regular guest, and visiting Rotarian Renee Douglas who will be leaving to go back to her home in North Carolina, but will visit the club again when she comes down to visit family who lives in the area.
Happy Dollars were on the agenda, and our Rotarians didn't disappoint. Maria Lewis had a happy dollar for a Top Chef fundraiser she will be heading up for her organization. We know that she will hit it out of the park with her energy and experience! Bob Solano had happy dollar to celebrate the birth of a new great grandson who is sure to be successful with the name: Roman A. Solano. Bob also acknowledged all the hard work his son Brian did in cleaning up the REC property. Now if we could just get Brian to actually become a Rotarian we would all be happy! Bland Eng wanted everyone to know all the phone numbers at the hospital will be changing with the exception of the main # 681-5551 which will remain the same.
Steve Moran had a happy thank you dollar for the lovely Christmas Party hosted by Kimberly and Roger Rivard and was especially impressed with the ride in the elevator. It's the little things like an elevator in a house that really impress us, isn't it? However, Steve did say that now that it's a new year, he'll have to take the stairs at Roger's next time!
Troy Dimsdale updated the club on the Annual Golf Tournament at Buckhorn on Tuesday, January 21st. We are still in need of foursomes, some individual players, hole sponsors and event sponsors. We are closing in on making this event very successful, but need a big final push in the next two weeks from all of our Rotarians.
Joe Campoamor was excited to see so many Early Bird sponsors and tickets. The club has already secured a tick below $30,000 for the event. We do need additional game for the event, and we want everyone to keep pushing ticket sales, both general admission and VIP, and sponsors. Committees will be meeting very soon after the golf tournament has completed. Larry Fassett stepped up and found someone to donate three hogs for the event! Let's keep it rolling!
Pat Skidmore asked all the members to be thinking about a service project we could all get involved with on Saturday, February 6th. We need to get this organized so we can continue the service piece of what we do as Rotarians. Please contact Pat if there is a worthy project out there that we can impact.
President Chuck had some samples of Rotary shirts and will be bringing in other samples for Wild Game. Please get with him if you are interested so he can get the order in and completed.
The big guest speaker for the week was Lee Elam who talked to the club about his experience with the Peace Corps. Lee talked about his great experience in Columbia, South America, the importance of learning Spanish, how the Peace Corps came about under President Kennedy, the living conditions and the importance of service. It was inspiring to see Lee's enthusiasm as he recounted several experiences in his time serving in the Peace Corps. Thanks, Lee!
